WALKING/CYCLING ROADS

THE EPHESUS - MİMAS ROAD

All historical accumulation on the Peninsula from the ancient Ionian civilization to the Ottoman artifacts that have been carried from thousands of years ago to today have been, for the first time, turned into walking and cycling paths in İzmir.

The Ephesus – Mimas Road, going through Selçuk, Menderes, Seferihisar, Güzelbahçe, Urla, Çeşme and Karaburun districts, embraces all the natural, historical and cultural riches on this course. Within the scope of the routes created by the voluntary efforts of the professional mountaineers and trekkers, cyclists, olive cultivators and vinedressers, organized by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality; information such as means of transport, geographical data, accommodation facilities, layover and camping sites, healthcare facilities, historical and natural riches and points of bearing are marked on maps. Road signs have been placed on routes marked conforming to international standards.

The six cities of the Ionian civilization that form the main backbone of the routes are on the Ephesus – Mimas Road: Ephesus (Efes-Selçuk), Colophon (Değirmendere-Menderes), Lebedos (Ürkmez-Seferihisar), Teos (Sığacık-Seferihisar), Klazomenai (İskele-Urla) and Erythrai (Ildırı-Çeşme). Another Ionian city Phokaia (Foça) is, by way of the blue route, connected to the Peninsula through Karaburun.

The 709 km long, 49 course walking path begins at the Temple of Artemis in the city of Ephesus; ending in Mimas; the mythological name of Karaburun.

The 190 kilometer part of the 773 kilometer long cycling route between the Çeşme Port and Temple of Artemis has been confirmed to be in compliance with the EuroVelo (European Cycle Route Network) standards. The olive route, going through Güzelbahçe, Çeşme, Seferihisar, Menderes and Selçuk districts, consists of seven regional stages and 21 sub-routes. The vineyard route, with its 151 km route, includes vineyards in Selçuk, Seferihisar, Menderes, Urla, Karaburun and Çeşme.

The Ephesus– Mimas Road, which forms the basis for the Peninsula Tour Routes, enables its visitors to learn the region by way of living it. The route roads coincide with sleek beaches, forest camps, excursion sites, excavation sites and ruins, museums, olive groves and workshops, vineyards; village guesthouses, places sweetened by local flavors, marketplaces and festivals.

Our Collaborators

We are headed towards the unknown with the "Ephesus - Mimas Road". Hidden treasures of nature and history become our companions as they enlighten the unknown. All of these endeavors are co-performed with relevant non-governmental organizations. We have broken new grounds all across Turkey, or maybe even globally. İzmir, once again, has exhibited its difference. Those kind-hearted people, who value organization and sharing, have established routes and collected data by voluntarily working in the field during the winter cold. Beginning from June, they have also marked the routes in the summer heat.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality cordially extends its thanks to all of the directors and members of the NGO's, who have voluntarily made great efforts for the sake of this project...

The Walking Path

The Walking paths and cycling routes that capture natural life constitute the basis of history and vineyard themed routes. The 709 kilometer long walking path (450 kilometers with its main outline), connects to six ancient Ionian cities (involved in the Peninsula Project) and other historical areas. This walking path starts from the Selçuk Artemis Temple and ends by reaching the Karaburun Peninsula from Erythrai.
With the organization of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality in the field works, trekkers that are members of mountaineering clubs and associations, split into eight groups. 49 walking courses were determined on the 709 kilometer route between Selçuk and Karaburun. Trekkers, with GPS devices, found camping areas, water resources and historical and natural heritages worth seeing on the route and these places were marked on maps.

THE CYCLING ROAD

A non-stop cycling road of 40 km is being constructed by the coastal line in the city. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality's bike rental system Bisim stations aim to unite the cycling routes on the peninsula. On the other, hand the municipality tries to integrate the city to the European Cycling Network (Eurovelo). Eurovelo has 14 routes, consisting of a total of 70 thousand km that are managed by the European Cycling Federation. European cycling roads will be connected with the Peninsula through Çeşme via the sea when the membership is realized. The end point in İzmir will be the ancient city of Ephesus. The project is estimated to expand from Aydın, Kuşadası to Muğla and the Mediterranean on the basis of the partnership project between the cities.

Along with the organization of the municipality that aims to connect the cycling routes to the urban roads as well as the Mediterranean network, four associations and communities have also worked in the field, focusing on bikes. The cyclists have started pedalling in two groups from the Çeşme port. The cyclists have defined the routes in compliance with the Eurovelo parameters and consisting of 773 km that ends at the temple of Artemis, in Selçuk. Three (190 km) of the 15 courses that have surfing schools, spas, beaches and natural attractions are in the Eurovelo standards. The cycling route is numbered with many natural and historical attractions that are worth being visited on the Peninsula.
