Transportation to the beginning of the course: For transportation to Balıklıova, which is 69 km from Konak, exit from the Karaburun junction of the İzmir – Çeşme highway. Follow the İzmir – Çeşme highway in the direction of Çeşme. Turn from the IYTE (İzmir Technology of Institute) junction to right in the Gülbahçe direction. You can reach Balıklıova from the following junction.
For public transportation, go to F.Altay (Üçkuyular) by bus or metro. You can take the Balıklıova minibuses or the municipal bus numbered 735 from the Üçkuyular bus terminal.
Details of the course: There are four abandoned mills and the ruins of a mill dating back to the Byzantine Era in Balıklıova. The “Balıklıova rendering plant”, among four abandoned mills, has a demolished roof but it has two stones used to press olive, a press and stoneware. The stones in its garden were used in the mill. You can see broken the footing stone and mortars in the other three mills.
Byzantine ceramics also exist around the Byzantine Era mills in the region. It is thought that this antique mill was spun by a donkey and it has a single stone system. Furthermore, it has still the footing stone and the pressing stone which are believed to be made from local stones.
If you move towards north by passing the west coast of the Karaburun Peninsula from Balıklıova, you can arrive at Eğriliman. You can come across some historical riches such as fishing boats and roofing tiles from the Roman Period and Khorasan jar parts in the region.
After turning to the main road and moving left, you will arrive at a viewing terrace where you can enjoy the unique view of Chios on the Küçükbahçe – Karaburun – Yaylaköy turn. You can reach Eski Küçükbahçe village by following the Eski Küçükbahçe signs. There is an abandoned olive oil mill. It has a press dating back to 1884, working with a four stone pressing system. You can also see another abandoned olive oil mills in the region called Aşağı Mahalle. A historical fountain is also located in the sloping road going to the mill.
If you turn to the main road and keep moving tothe right, you can go to Yaylaköy by turning left from the Küçükbahçe – Karaburun – Yaylaköy turn. You can see a century old plane tree in the entry of Yaylaköy, rest by the fountain near the plane tree, and see the olive pressing system and mortar near the fountain. You can encounter the building, which was at first operation with a single stone system but is now turned into a four stone system in Yaylaköy, No: 129. It was also operated as an olive oil and a flour mill. You can rest in the Yaylaköy end point of Büyükdere Valley 2 km ahead and drink water from the fountain dating back to 1955. When you follow this road, you can arrive to the Karaburun center. There are a number of old olive trees, stinging nettles, anemones and muskroots.
